Eugenio “Gene” Fernández, FACHE An essential member of the
executive team, Gene Fernandez currently serves as the Chief Information Officer for L.A. Care
Health Plan in Los Angeles, CA. (www.lacare.org). Prior to this role, Gene served as Vice President, Information Services
for the Accident Fund Insurance Company of America in Lansing, Michigan from January - 2005 to June - 2007.(www.accidentfund.com). He also previously served as the Chief Information
Officer and Chief Technology Officer of Sparrow Health System over the span of 5 ½ years. Prior to moving
to mid-Michigan in 1999, Gene was a senior IT consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Healthcare Consulting Practice in
Washington, D.C. His corporate background includes over 20 years of experience as a healthcare information
management executive. Prior to his stint as a consultant, Gene served in a myriad of Information Technology (IT)
leadership positions for Department of Defense health care delivery organizations as an active duty commissioned officer in
the Navy Medical Service Corps. His other positions included serving as Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the National
Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD (1995-1998); as well as CIO, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA (1989-1993). Gene has
extensive experiences with healthcare IT systems implementation, business process re-engineering, IT strategic planning, IT
outsourcing and project management. He is board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow in the American
College of Healthcare Executives (www.ache.org). He is also a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society
(www.himss.org) and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (www.cio-chime.org). Gene earned a Master of Science degree from Purdue University and
a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University. He has also completed the Information Management Executive
Course sponsored by the University of Michigan & the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). In
addition, he has also completed a healthcare management certificate program sponsored by Case Western Reserve University and
completed a second master’s from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2007 (http://mis.uis.edu/). Gene augments his professional work
with a variety of volunteer pursuits. Until very recently, he was very active in the Lansing community for a period of
eight years as the past-Chair of the Information Technology Council (Lansing TechConnect) and former Board member
of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is a former member of the Lansing Rotary and former Trustee on the Capitol
Region Community Foundation Board (www.crcfoundation.org/aboutroster.html). Gene is a native of
Havana, Cuba. He arrived in the United States with his family at the age of three. He is the proud father of two adult daughters
and two adult step-sons.
